Matt, Eggshell or Semi-Gloss? Paint Finishes Explained
Finish decides how your walls handle marks, moisture and mould, yet most people only think about colour. This guide compares matt, eggshell and semi-gloss, answers whether sheen affects mould in Singapore, and tells you which finish we use on HDB walls and why.
What Is a Paint Finish?
A paint finish, also called sheen, is how much light the dried paint reflects. The scale runs from flat matt with no shine, through eggshell and low sheen, up to semi-gloss and full gloss.
One trade-off runs the whole scale. More sheen means tougher, more washable, more moisture-resistant, but it shows every bump and roller mark. Less sheen hides wall flaws and looks softer, but marks more easily and holds dirt.
Matt vs Eggshell vs Semi-Gloss: What's the Difference?
Matt has no shine and hides wall imperfections best. Eggshell has a slight sheen and wipes clean more easily. Semi-gloss is shiny, tough and moisture-resistant, but shows every flaw in the wall underneath. The photo above shows all three on the same blue.

In practice, only three points on this scale matter for a Singapore flat: matt for walls and ceilings, low sheen for walls that take more punishment, and semi-gloss for doors and trim.
Which Paint Finish Is Best for HDB Walls?
Washable matt is the best finish for HDB walls. It hides hairline cracks, old patches and uneven plaster, looks soft under Singapore's strong daylight, and lets you wipe fingerprints off with a damp cloth.

The one upgrade worth paying for is low sheen in rooms that get daily punishment. Does Paint Sheen Affect Mould?
Yes. Matt paint is more porous, so it holds the moisture and dirt that mould grows on. Higher-sheen finishes are denser, shed moisture better, and wipe clean without damaging the surface. In Singapore's humidity that difference shows up fast: a flat matt wall in a bathroom or against a damp external wall can spot with mould within a year or two.
Sheen is not the whole answer though. Ventilation prevents more mould than any paint choice, so open the window or run the exhaust fan after showers. Which Finish for Doors, Frames and Skirting?
Semi-gloss enamel. Doors, door frames, window frames and skirting get touched and knocked constantly, so they need a harder, wipeable coating made for wood and metal. This is standard on every job we do, not an add-on.
